Creating stable communities depends on affordable housing, long term security, and land that is community controlled and well cared for. Meeting these needs means reimagining our relationship to land and housing. Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are one potential way to do this. By owning land collectively, a community or neighborhood gains real and lasting control over how that land is used, keeping decisions about affordability, stability, and care for the land in the hands of the people they affect most.
Under the guidance of Raychel Gadson, this two-hour program will offer a deep dive into CLTs, with the goal of helping you determine if a CLT might be right for reimagining housing and land where you live. You’ll learn about the history of CLTs in the U.S., how they've been built and used, and some of the challenges they face. You’ll also receive additional readings on CLT and resources for forming them.

Dr. Raychel Gadson is a passionate advocate for community-led development and housing justice. She moved to Baltimore in 2020 to pursue a doctorate and quickly became involved in community organizing for environmental justice and affordable housing. As Development Coordinator for the South Baltimore Community Land Trust from 2023-2025, she led community engagement programs and oversaw the development of permanently affordable housing and an environmental justice center. Raychel completed a PhD in political science at Johns Hopkins University in 2025. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in African and African-American studies from the University of Kansas. As a scholar and organizer, Raychel aims to use academic research to support community organizing and build grassroots political power.
